We started the season with a a couple tournements. The first tourney was the Boston striper shootout (www.stripershootout.com), with a $5,000 first prize it attracted a lot of attention from all the best anglers. We managed third which we feel sort of short changed because our fish was probably the heaviest weighing in at 42lbs however it was a length tournement so our fish did not take the prize at 44 1/4 inches. The following weekend was another tourney that we BOMBED in and did not even place. However we had a shot at some medium-large tuna. We have managed one giant so far and a few mediums that were released. We had Wayne Walgreen and his party for June 26-27, one tuna trip and one striper trip... here are the results from the tuna trip:

That fish tipped the scales at about 130lbs and measured nearly 60 inches. On the 27th we went for the stripers we caught close to 30 fish with a good amount of keepers mixed in here is George with the two fish they kept:

After that trip we got the tuna itch for a while. Which turned out to be a long boat ride/whale watch. We got a call from Wayne again on July 9th for another charter with his wife and daughters and that was some of the best striper fishing we have seen in years. We easilly caught 40 fish in a little over two hours where they had had enough and we headed for port.
Commercial bass season opened July 12th... which if it was commercial dog fishing we would have had a banner day. We switched gears on the 13th and ended up with this:

Final tally was 27 fish over 34" that weighed in at 623lbs. We ran out of bait or it would have been 30 (the limit). Well thats the latest, Call us and book soon while the fishing is still hot, and there are dates still available!!!
Well its been a while sorry for the lack of reports we had some technical difficulties with the site here...
We ended up hitting the commercial bass season pretty hard with a couple charters mixed in. We had wayne back with his wife and daughters. What a show that day the fish were worked up good. We must have caught more than 30 bass in two hours.

August 23 we had sean out for a Tuna/Bass trip. We managed to pluck this tuna out of a fleet of about 60 boats around 0900. After we had that meat in the boat we headed inside to catch a few big bass. All in all a successful day.

We had expected the arrival of School Bluefins in mid-late July however that big push of fish didn't happen and we had keep postponing our repeat customers until the fish showed up. However this gave us a chance to take another shot at Giant fishing. We went out to southern Jeffries and set up in early August. We were set up in the dark by 0430. However we didn't mark our fist fish until almost 1000. He stayed around for an hour and seem un interetsed in any of our offerings. All of a sudden at about 1100 we went tight. Man O Man did we go tight this thing battled its way to a 2 and a half hour fight on a 85 degree day. Dripping with sweat and 3 miles away from our anchor ball we tail roped the fish. If we lost him I swear he was a grander. We took the 3 mile jog back to the ball towing the fish. By this time all our live bait was dead the boat was in shambles and we were completely worn out. We set the bait net once again and got set up at about 2:30. About an hour later we had were marking again. However this time there was no hesitation the fish came through and piled on right away. We drop the ball and Mark goes to wind down on the reel... He says "its broken." WHAT??? ya... a bearing went in the reel, we thought game over... but we put our heads together and began to strip another reel. The fish beban running down to the dacron of the broken reel just about the time we got the working reel stripped. We cut the broken reel line with the fish on it and tied it to the new line then backed down and never let the line off the reel again. So we were good had him straight up and down after about a half hour. When Mark jinxed it. "Thank god this fish isn't like his brother from hell." Well after that comment it was another two hours before we had a harpoon shot. Out of ice and beat we returned to sell the catch. One dressed 391 and the other 376. We were too tried even for pictures at that point. About a week later we went out to do some commercial bass fishing on the grounds just south of gloucester. We set up and after 4 hours we had marked one bass and missed him and caught about 4 bluefish. When we say the heck with this. Up comes the deep line and we just happend to glance at the screen... A Tuna. We thought maybe a little 100-200 lbs. After about 10 minutes of gettin the 130 rigged up while Mark played with the fish with a bass rod that I was praying he didn't actually get the thing to bite on we were ready for action. Another ten more minues of playin around he took the bait... the right one. after about 40 minutes we had done it... Caught a Giant Bluefin at the "Groaner." The fish dresed 506lbs. |
